HUNGER FOR gOD'S WORD: mIChael's story
| Share |
The time is 4:20 pm on a Friday and staff of the bookstore are preparing to close the shop and prepare their accounts for the week. Just before closing, in walk two young boys. The older boy requests to buy a King James Bible. In their usual professional manner the staff inquire who will be using the Bible. Upon realizing that the Bible is intended for the boy himself, they encouraged him to buy either a Good News Version or the CEV (Youth Bible) which will be most appropriate for his age.

Michael Acheampong finally got his own Bible after 5 months of saving and a two-mile walk to the nearest Bible store. | |
The staff on duty is a bit more curious and asks the boy how much money he has. ‘I have ¢90,000’, the boy replies. ‘How did you get this much money?’ asks the store officer. ‘I saved it myself’, the young boy answers. ‘When I am given money for school, I save sometimes half of it. This is about ¢3,000. Sometimes, I also receive tips after performing tasks for elderly people. I don’t spend all these monies but put them away as part of my savings. I have been saving since September 2006’. That is 5 months of diligence and patience.
Now at this stage everyone in the bookstore gets excited. The young boy walked two miles from his home to Bible House to realize a dream and by the grace of God, his toil was not been in vain. He was served with a copy of the Good News Bible and his face suddenly lit up with joy.
Michael Acheampong, the young boy is aged 13 years. He attends Bishop Mixed School near Holy Trinity Cathedral, High Street and is in JSS1. Michael attends the Palladium branch of Lighthouse Chapel International.
Michael says his quest for Bible was deepened when he could not open his Bible at school when some of his friends did. His parents either did not have enough money to buy him or did not see the need for him to own one at such a young age.
