Thank you for visiting the Manitoba portion of our new CBS website.
We have been providing Scripture resources in Manitoba since 1872?two short years following the actual creation of our province. We are still at it!
The Objibwe people of the Riverton area (just north of Winnipeg) maintain that the word Manitoba can legitimately be translated as a god who speaks. Though slightly different than the officially adopted rendering, we kind of like that translation. We believe God speaks in a uniquely personal way through his Word. This explains why through unwavering translation, publication, distribution efforts we constantly seek to provide adequate and appropriate Scripture resources in everyones heart language.
The importance of this was possibly best captured a few years ago in a response given by an Inuit woman, a lifelong reader of Scripture but in a dialect that was not her mother tongue. When she first received the Scriptures in her heart language, she delightfully exclaimed, God speaks my language
..but this time without an accent. In the Spirit of Pentecost, the Bible Society pursues the reversal of Babel so that all may experience a heart to heart with a loving heavenly Father. After all, what father would speak to his children in a foreign language.
Beyond the provision of Scripture resources in everyones heart language, we are also committed to providing Scripture engagement opportunities such as Walk Thru the Bible and Discovering the Bible seminars and Proclamation events. This fall we are looking to add Lectio Divina and Praying With the Bible sessions to our panoply of services favouring Scripture engagement experiences. All of these Scripture encounter activities are designed to help participants discover one thing: The Word. For Life.
